Little is known about Francisco Barranco. The artist was active mostly in Seville, although the style of his vibrant kitchen still lifes, painted with dynamic brushstrokes, differs from that of his contemporaries in the city. Works by Northern Europeanmasters often served as models for his paintings, and he frequently used elements commonly found in Netherlandish still lifes, such as the motif of the bagged bird. This has led some researchers to suggest he may have originated from Flanders, arriving in Spain as a mature artist. This work alsoreveals his familiarity with the art of painters in Madrid, especially Velázquez.
