Jean-Baptiste, nephew of Philippe de Champaigne, rose to become official portraitist in the royal court. As a child he joined the family workshop, and following a brief study tour in Rome, he returned to Paris to work alongside his uncle. He participated in decorating the royal palaces in Vincennes and Versailles, and several of his works are still visible in their original settings (in situ). The Allegory of Peace once adorned the suite of Louis XIV’s firstborn son in the now-destroyed Tuileries Palace. Following recent restoration, the painting has regained its fresh colours, vibrantly recalling the highest tradition of Parisian court painting from the 1660s and 1670s.
