The friendship between August von Pettenkofen and the Hungarian painter, József Borsos, dated from their days as students at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The two men even rented a studio together in Vienna between 1845 and 1848. According to Arpad Weixlgärtner, a personal acquaintance of Pettenkofen and the author of an early monograph on the artist, Borsos’s style had a profound influence on the Austrian artist.
The precise year in which Pettenkofen produced this life-sized half-portrait of József Borsos is not known, as Pettenkofen rarely dated his works. The length of Borsos’s hair, however, suggests that he was fairly young when the portrait was painted. The greyish brown tone of the painting was typical of the period between 1847 and 1853, before Pettenkofen’s association with the Barbizon school, while another well-known portrait of Borsos might also provide a clue to the dating of the work: in the 1861 lithography by József Marastoni, the Hungarian painter is portrayed with short hair.
