The head depicting a young goddess was carved of marble, but the fine modelling of her tresses make it resemble bronze. The eyes were inlaid (with bronze or glass). Her long, voluminous hair is neatly braided into a bun tied with a ribbon. The head thus highlights the beauty of the goddess, and probably represents Aphrodite or Persephone.
The head was broken long ago. The parts here were assembled in Rome in the early 20th century. By that time, fragments of the other half had been preserved in an English private collection for a century.
Marble analyses have shown that the statue was made of white marble of unknown origin.
