Feliratok

This composition with three figures depicts the flagellation, one of the stations of the Passion of Christ. The Saviour, with his hands tied behind his back, is a symbol of suffering borne with dignity. Two attendants are standing beside him, a helmeted soldier in an all’antica suit of armour and a cap-wearing, grotesque-looking foot soldier. Small statuettes of this theme were particularly popular in the baroque period, and the sculptures by François Duquesnoy (1597–1643), a Flemish-born sculptor, active in Rome, frequently served as models for these kinds of cabinet pieces. The less classical formulation, precious metal material, and meticulous, chiselled execution of the Budapest sculpture group suggest that it is the work of a master skilled in goldsmith’s art.
