On the relief, Christ lies on shroud, encompassed by two angels. The iconographical type of the “pietà with angels” arose in Italy and France during the fourteenth century. The Budapest relief would seem to have been made by a sculptor working in Spain in view of the gilding of the relief’s surface and the detailed decoration on the gilding. Given the close stylistic analogies, it may well have been made in Navarra. Based on the fixing points on the back of the relief, the work seems to have been part of a larger altarpiece. The use of similar framed reliefs as decorative elements can be observed on other late Renaissance Spanish altars. The relief in Budapest probably comes from a Passion altar.
