Riemenschneider used his popular sculptural types repeatedly, as was the custom in the period. Thus, as time passed, many crucifixes were made in his workshop. Today twenty or so very similar pieces can be linked with the workshop. In the crucifixes by Riemenschneider, the figure of Christ typically has a long and narrow face, while the crown of thorns is tied in the middle and the feet are firmly stretched out. The sculptor developed his own recognisable style and types, based on the works of his forerunners. He was inspired by Nicolaus Gerhaert (mentioned 1462; d. 1473 [?]), the greatest German Gothic sculptor of the 15th century.
