Ivory was not only used in the decoration of furniture, musical instruments, and artifacts; it was also used to make small-scale sculptures and reliefs. In the 17th and 18th centuries there was a revival of ivory carving in the German states and in the Netherlands. The lively trade of small-scale ivory statuettes increased in southern Germany in the first half of the 17th century. The development of
ornamental decoration owed much to the excellent craftsmanship, which is reflected in the exhaustive and detailed carving of the thin leaves of the vine.
