The sculptor Ludwig Jupan von Marburg worked in Kalkar and in Marburg. His style was markedly influenced by the art of the Low Countries, which was true of most sculptors working in towns along the Rhine at the time. His sculptures had some typical characteristics: an oval face, a high forehead and thin though dominant lips. The character of the sculpture of Saint Catherine is very close to the artworks of Ludwig Jupan, so it was probably carved in his workshop. Saint Catherine of Alexandria was one of the most popular female saints in the Late Middle Ages and was often portrayed.
