Giuseppe Torretti, a sculptor and wood carver working mainly in and around Venice, was a representative of the so-called classicising baroque style, his stylistic approach was also strengthened by the experiences of his trip to Rome in 1710. In the 1730s, Torretti worked in Udine Cathedral, on a series of reliefs for the Cappella Manin, and during this period he may also have completed the marble altarpiece for the chapel of Villa Pecile in the village of San Giorgio della Richinvelda, near Udine. The chapel, which was intended for public use, was commissioned in 1732 by the then-owner of the villa, Giovanni Leoni, a Venetian citizen. The terracotta relief in Budapest is a bozzetto, a sketch, of the large marble altarpiece, on which the artist presented the harmonious composition of the Holy Trinity from a fresh perspective.
