At the beginning of his career, Georg Schweigger, a medallist and sculptor from Nuremberg, mainly created small-scale reliefs and plaquettes. He received more notable commissions only after the Thirty Years’ War (1618−48). From 1660 until his
death he worked on his most significant sculptural composition, the Neptune Fountain, which was planned for the Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg (it is now at the Peterhof Palace near Saint Petersburg). The small bronze in Budapest strictly follows the forms of the fountain’s figures, and the hole on the dolphin’s mouth points to the fact that it might be a model for a fountain.
