This early depiction of the dead Christ on the cross, the Christus patiens, may be dated to the beginning of the 13th century on the basis of its stylistic features, as well as iconographical considerations. In contrast to the foreign crucifixes, which inundated the whole of Italy at that time, this Umbrian corpus represents a local type. The carving technique resulted in a flat surface, rich with fine details. Despite its fragmentary state, the statue is an extremely powerful expression of medieval piety.
