Guglielmo della Porta is primarily known today for his small bronzes produced for private devotion. His reputation was reflected by his rank in the papal court as keeper of the papal seals. His Passion series, composed of fourteen pieces, was only partially executed, and the wax models left in his workshop on his death were later dispersed. The Crucifixion was also cast after Guglielmo’s lost model. The
angels appearing by the cross reflect the influence of his Roman colleague Michelangelo (1475–1564).
