The town of Mechelen in Belgium was a major centre of alabaster sculpture from the mid-sixteenth century onwards. The reliefs from Mechelen have a decorative effect, owing to their elaborate frames and the gilding. The rhythm and harmonic unity of the Budapest Entombment composition and the proportions of the figures and their arrangement around a diagonally positioned sarcophagus show how Italian late Renaissance influenced Flemish art.
