This bronze statuette, which comes from the collection of the sculptor István Ferenczy is identified by an inscription on its base: Lorenzo de Cappone di Jacopo (1512–1573) was a member of a well-known Florentine banking family operating in Lyon. Around the neck of the bearded man wearing a hat and a wide fur coat we can see the badge of the Order of Saint Michael, an honour bestowed upon the wealthy banker by the French King Charles IX (1560–1574) in recognition of his charitable donations during the great famine of Lyon. We can easily make out the figure of the Archangel Michael on the small medallion, with a sword in his right hand, and a pair of scales in his left.
Inscribed on the base: LORENZO · CAPPONI.
