The creator of the two bronze statues (see also inv. 5306) of almost identical size and posture can be found in TizianoAspetti’s (ca. 1559–1606) wider circle.
There are numerous copies and variants of the figures depicted in the typically twisted “mannerist posture”, wearing a helmet and armour, carrying a warlord staff. The model for the composition was the relief decoration (1592–1593) of the altar of Saint Daniel in the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, where Aspetti depicted scenes from the martyrdom of the saint, “starring” the Roman soldiers who carried out the torture.
