A fine example of early Baroque German sculpture is the terracotta sketch forming the trio of St. Anne, the Virgin Mary, and the Infant Jesus. The women are dressed in fashionable contemporary costumes, but their depiction is in keeping with old conventions: the Virgin appears as a diminutive figure by her mother’s side, suggesting the age difference between them. An interesting feature of the elaborate sculpture, which was probably once decorated with paint, is the use of the chisel to form the curls in the hair of the figures, typical of woodcarvings.
