Jacopo Sansovino used many different materials in his work, including less durable ones. He and the painter Andrea del Sarto (1486–1531) made decorations for the triumphal procession of Pope Leo X (1513−21) in Florence in 1515. Two types of Madonna are known from Sansovino’s late Venetian period, made of the fragile material of papier mâché (cartapesta). No less than eleven pieces remained from one of the types, but only two from the other of which one is housed in
Budapest. The latter was named the Pardelfell type after a Madonna in Berlin (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), wearing a robe with floral pattern looking like a leopard (Pardelfell in German).
