In Christian iconography, the story of the Samaritan woman had once been a symbol of true faith and later came to represent the forgiveness of sins. The detailed terracotta sculpture in Budapest used to be painted. It was most probably a model of a larger stone or marble statue. The final version of the statue is unknown, though as far as 15th-century Italian sculpture is concerned it is quite rare for both the model and the final piece to have survived.
