The Robbia workshop often used contemporary Florentine sculptors’ works as models for compositions. The glazed terracotta relief in Budapest – similarly to other versions – was inspired by one of Antonio Rossellino’s (1427/1428–79)
marble reliefs (Florence, Bargello). The figures of the Virgin and Jesus are almost alike in these terracotta variations, but the backgrounds are quite diverse. In view of this diversity, it was thought that some of them were not produced in the workshop of Andrea della Robbia but by Benedetto Buglioni, who ran a majolica workshop and had been a rival of Andrea since the 1480s.
