In Florence, numerous copies and variations of stucco and terracotta sculptures representing the Madonna were made; they usually functioned as domestic altarpieces. The model for the statue in Budapest was probably a marble relief by
Ghiberti, which has been lost. The popularity of the sculpture is indicated by the fact that a hundred or so variations of it are known today. Although the Madonna in Budapest is made of less costly stucco material, its surface was not only painted,
but also gilded and decorated with punching.
