Michele da Firenze worked with Lorenzo Ghiberti on the bronze northern doors of the Florence Baptistery. In the 1430s, he was commissioned with the decoration of the Capella Pellegrini in the Church of Sant’Anastasia in Verona. In an unusual fashion, he decorated the inner walls with terracotta reliefs. The relief of the Virgin’s death in the Museum of Fine Arts embodies the sculptor’s characteristic style, while in its iconography it follows a similar composition by Andrea di Cione di Arcangelo (Orcagna) in the Orsanmichele Church in Florence. The Budapest terracotta may once have formed the central part of an altar.
