The marble commemorative tomb of the Renaissance humanist, Carlo Marsuppini (1398—1453), in the Basilica di Santa Croce, Florence, was made by Desiderio da Settignano after 1453. On the monument, regarded as one of the most influential Renaissance designs, Marsuppini is depicted with the characteristic humanist attributes, namely a book in his hands and a laurel wreath on his head. The classical motif of a triumphal arch is complemented by rich ornamental decoration reminiscent of the elegant art of Lorenzo Ghiberti. All this is supplemented by youths holding garlands as well as cherubs with coats of arms, which did not survive on the copy. On the medallion of the lunette there is a depiction of the Virgin and the Infant Jesus, surrounded by angels.
Comissioned by the museum in 1907, cast by Giuseppe Lelli in Florence. it was erected in 1908, at the Renaissance Hall.
