The bust, which represents a bearded man, should be envisaged as set on a free-standing marble pillar. The man has a characteristic hairstyle: both at the front and the back his long hair is twisted around the ribbon that encircles the head, and there are shorter, thick, and ruffled locks above the forehead. This arrangement evokes the fur on bulls’ foreheads. The bust thus depicts Dionysos, who could also take the form of a bull when appearing among people. The Roman herm may be the adaptation of a Greek statue from the Classical period.
