Whether the statue belongs to the Florentine Niobids has been debated since the seventeenth century. The figure bends slightly forward, gazing down. She wears a chiton tied around the chest, and a close-fitting mantle pulled over her head. If this is a gesture of protection, she could be the nurse of the Niobids, shielding one of the children from the arrows of the gods. But the statue differs from the Florentine pieces in many details. If it really is a nurse, it must belong to another group of the Niobids. The head is ancient, but did not originally belong to the statue in Florence, many parts of which are modern restorations.
