The youth kneels on his left leg, while his right is bent, as if he wanted to stand up. The upper body is twisted. The right arm must have been raised, perhaps to shield off danger, the left stretched across the thigh. It is uncertain whether the piece represents a Niobid. The Roman marble statue is backed by a thick tree trunk, but the bronze that served as its model did not need this support. The creator of the plaster cast neglected this awkward solution, and his use of bronze coloured paint also shows that he aimed to evoke the original bronze statue.
