The naked god, depicted with a boyish body, strides forward, presumably towards a resting figure, giving him dreams. The small wings on his temples show that Hypnos is swift in flight. He must have held his usual attributes: in his left hand a poppy, in his outstretched right hand a small dinking horn (rhyton), with which he poured dreams onto those falling asleep. In Greek mythology Hypnos (Sleep) is the brother of Thanatos (Death). This statue was probably made after early Hellenistic period models (300—150 BC).
