The statue depicts one of the great heroes of the Trojan war, Diomedes of Argos. His left hand, which did not survive, may have held the statuette of Pallas Athene, which he and Odysseus seized from the palace of Troy. The statue, the Palladion, was believed to make the city invincible until it remained within its walls; its theft was thus a prerequisite for taking the city. This plaster cast is a copy of a Roman marble statue that followed a Classical Greek bronze. This representation of Diomedes later served as a model for the portraits of several Roman emperors.
