The trapezoidal relief originally made of bronze is divided into four registers. In the lowermost register we see the winged Artemis holding two lions as the mistress of animals. A mythical story unfolds above her: Heracles aims his bow at a fleeing centaur, whose body is composed of the figure of a man and the rear of a horse. The two upper registers show two confronting griffins and three eagles. The bronze relief probably decorated a stand that perhaps supported a vessel for burning incense. It may have been a votive offering in the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia.
