Ginsborg’s work in the past three decades has been driven by an obsession to seek and at times playfully experiment. He consistently tries out new materials, techniques and methods. He works slowly, on several works at the same time, returning to them from time to time to develop the final form. In his pictures, it is mostly a grid-work that constitutes the working surface in which he experiments with doubling and shifting various geometrical elements. His favourite method is shifting a self-repeating surface or rotating a splitting plane with identical motifs around a spatial axis.
The systematic procedure represented by two drawn studies in the collection (Syntax and Alphabet) appears visually more relaxed and freely formed in the large painting entitled Temporarily Untitled. Presented first in London’s Serpentine Gallery, the picture had no title, and the temporarily attached “designation” at this important station of the work’s history has come to stay – as the outcome of a playful idea.
