It was possibly Michael Farrell who arrived farthest among the Irish artists in international recognition in the 1960s. He uses an idiom of universal artistic forms that roots deeply in Irish traditions at the same time. He often uses an airbrush to spray the colours for his singular pictures. Against the unified heavy tone of the sprayed background hovering at times in vapoury rags, sharply outlined forms appear. In the space created by linking often vibrating triangles he evokes the Celtic ornaments. Farrell settled in Paris in 1971.
