Pierre Charles Trémolieres could have been a major figure in French rococo painting, but in 1739, just as his career was taking off, he died an early death. ln recognition of his talent, two years earlier he had been involved in the decoration of the Hötel de Soubise, an outstanding work of the period. The generous elegance and unobtrusive sensuality of his three mythological scenes for the city palace are echoed in his Budapest painting. The superb composition of the two intertwining figures framed by the semicircular curve of the drapery is a fine testimony to his mature painterly skills. This work is a simplified version of a larger painting once in the possession of Louis XV, but lost in the course of time.
