A naked youth leans on a funerary post, staring into the distance: he is the deceased. He holds a hunting stick (lagobolon), his dog is sniffing at his feet — these are the attributes of a hunt, a way of life truly worthy of man. An elderly man stands beside him, leaning on a staff, probably his father. He looks at the youth, shattered: no parents should have to bury their child. Their gaze does not meet: he does not see his son — only his memory. A servant sits in mourning at the base of the stele. This is one of the later pieces of relief decorated Athenian grave stelae. It is almost like a sculpture — the earlier stelae were carved in much shallower relief.
