The stele, which is crowned with palmettes, commemorates a man named Demokleides. The young man appears as a warrior: he is seated on his mantle aboard a warship, his shield and Corinthian helmet are piled behind him. The figure rests his head against his hand, mourning his unfortunate fate. The prow and the ram of the ship were carved and the details painted (a painted oar and the blue of the sea was still visible after the discovery of the stele). The ship evokes how Demokleides died: fighting in a sea battle, far from his home. The stele probably decorated a cenotaph.
