Kiállítva Hungarian National Gallery Building B, First Floor, Art in the 19th Century – Variations on Realism. From Munkácsy to Mednyányszky

The Frenchman Louis-Ernst Barrias was already a celebrated sculptor when he presented his bust of Munkácsy at the Salon de Paris of 1879. The critics lauded the dynamism of the bust and the resemblance to the model. Barrias took special care to capture the painter’s wavy hair and his thick moustache and beard. Munkácsy owned the bust for the rest of his life, keeping it in a prominent place in his Parisian studio. After his death, it was kept by his widow, who then bequeathed it to the Hungarian state. Another version of the bust is displayed at the New York Public Library, together with Munkácsy’s large painting of Milton.
