The torso in the Vatican, carved of Parian marble, depicts Eros as an adolescent. His thick, wavy hair is parted in the centre and falls to his shoulders, on the forehead, it is tied in the knot of Herakles, which served as an amulet. He gazes to the right and downwards. Eros probably held a bow and arrow — his weapons to ignite people’s hearts. The statue was equipped with wings, which were carved separately and doweled on the back. Based on the characteristic S-shaped posture of the body, the statue can be tied to the school of Praxiteles. Its popularity is attested by nearly thirty ancient adaptations of the work that we know about.
