The three meter tall statue shows Athena in a Corinthian helmet and a cuirass bordered with snakes (aigis). She probably held a spear and a libation dish (patera) in her hands. The painted and gilded Roman marble statue was modelled after a famous Greek bronze sculpture, created by perhaps Kresilas or Alkamenes, the disciple of Pheidias, and dated to the last decades of the fifth century BC. This original may have been identical with an image of Athena that stood in the sanctuary of Hephaistos in Athens, next to the cult statue of the god of blacksmiths (see Room IV).
