The peculiar hairstyle is the only hint at the identity of this youth. Two other statues with a similar coiffure have also survived, and these exhibit the attributes of the god Apollon (for example laurels). Perhaps this head depicts him as well. The style of the head, which was created in the Roman Imperial period, evokes Greek works in the so-called Severe style of the early Classical period, but the statue may also have followed a later piece (1st century BC), whose creator was inspired by early Classical Greek art. The plaster cast shows the fragmentary head together with its modern restorations (like the chest). In the meantime these have been removed from the original.
