Sir Henry Raeburn was the first internationally recognized Scottish painter and one of the most prominent Scottish artists. His entire life and work are associated with Scotland, and Edinburgh
in particular. His works document a golden age of Scottish culture and society. His likenesses of
Highland military leaders, executed in a coarser painterly style, are worthy examples of his authentic,
sober, and forthright portraits, as are his delicate, sensitive depictions of ladies. A fine example of the latter is a congenial portrait of Barbara Mackenzie, the wife of Kenneth Murchison, painted in soft brushstrokes and warm tones. In the same years, shortly after the couple was married, Raeburn also painted a portrait of the husband, a surgeon returning from service in India, which piece is housed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal.
