The Island S. Cristoforo di Murano
Old Master Paintings
John Constable was the greatest master of English landscape painting, which emerged by the end of the eighteenth century. His style was inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch painters, but his brilliant brushwork, capturing the variability of natural phenomena and atmospheric effects, paved the way for Impressionism and J.M.W. Turner. Brilliant colours, vibrant atmosphere, and a vivid overall effect rather than the details characterise this small picture of the celebration of the first Treaty of Paris in 1814, in the painter’s home village.
